Topsy-Turvy Monsters
By Agnese Baruzzi
Topsy-Turvy Monsters is a simple but innovative picture book that turns the most innocent pictures into terrifying monsters with rotating flaps.
Perhaps the key feature to this picture book is the presentation. Each page features another monster, hidden in the guise of an everyday object.
FACT: Rotating flaps are more fun than lift flaps! Millie and Cooper love to turn the flaps and examine the interesting monsters underneath.
A short, rhyming stanza accompanies the illustrations.
Not-too-scary, light and easy, Halloween fun for young children.
Discussion Questions after reading:
When do things we see every day most often appear like frightening things? In the dark.
Explain that when things appear frightening in the dark we can turn on the lights and see them how they really are.
If the exercise is suitable for your child (perhaps not before bedtime!), turn off the lights and use your imagination to identify things around the room or house that appear like other things.
For example: A coat that looks like a person, laundry basket that looks like a hippo.
Turn on the light to identify what they really are.
Note: You can also perform this exercise outside by looking at clouds and imagining that you see shapes.
