The Baby That Roared

The Baby That Roared

The Baby That Roared is a story about Mr. and Mrs. Deer who always wanted a baby of their own to take care of but never had the chance until one day they find an ever so slightly suspicious baby deer on their doorstep with a very unusual appetite.

btr-preview1The presentation is simple and pleasant.

btr-preview2Clear visual cues are easy for children to catch. Millie enjoys pointing out what the monster left behind on the floor.

btr-preview3Repetition also helps young readers catch on to what is going on and what will happen next.

btr-preview4The story has an ambiguous ending, which usually means parents will need to explain it. However, as I wrote above, there are many visual and verbal cues that make reading The Baby that Roared a snap. Surprisingly, Millie understood the implications right away and no explanation was necessary.

Attention Questions to ask your child while reading:
What did the baby leave behind on the floor and who do the items belong to?
What happened to the friends that Mr. and Mrs. Deer invited over to help?
How many friends did the baby eat?
Who is hiding under the disguise of a cat?

Discussion Questions after reading:
What do you think the monster really wants from Mr. and Mrs. Deer?
Why was the monster hiding in disguise?
